Castles and fortresses

You will find many castles, fortresses and country houses that are worth seeing in the vicinity of the Loosdrechtse Plassen. Close to the lakes, you will find Sypesteyn Castle and the Nyenrode Business University.  It's no castle, but you will also come across Nieuwersluis Fortress when you cycle along the lakes. 

A little further away, you will find De Haar Castle, Zuylen Castle, Groeneveld Castkle, De Hooge Vuursche Castle and last but not least Drakensteyn Castle and Soestdijk Palace where the royal family used to live.

 

Zuylen Castle


Living museum with castle garden and impressive rooms. This old castle is located some distance from the Loosdrechtse Plassen, but is still definitely worth a visit. If you follow De Vecht in southward direction, you will eventually reach the lock.  Zuylen Castle has a program full of interesting exhibitions and performances. The garden and the interior of Zuylen Castle are also worth seeing.

The castle has a unique collection of antique furniture, paintings and utensils. The history is also well preserved. By walking the route through the castle, you will learn more and more about its unique 750-year history.

Castle-Museum Sypesteyn


Castle Museum Sypesteyn is one of the most impressive historic buildings in the area around the Loosdrechtse Plassen. A beautiful garden has been created around the castle, where you can go for wonderful walks and admire many different plants and trees.

The castle museum is also a beautiful sight to see on the inside. Walk through the old hallways and rooms and get a unique insight into the life's work of Jonkheer Henri van Sypesteyn.

Waterline Museum Fort near Vechten


At the ancient Fort near Vechten, you will discover how water became a weapon. Get immersed in ancient stories about the Water Lines. Guided tours of various fort buildings are possible.
